Miquel Silvestre on his way to Samarkand with the new Metzeler Karoo 3
After 2500 kilometres riding on his Karoo 3 tyres, Spanish bike touring journalist Miquel Silvestre has reached Baku, the Azerbaijani capital. The Karoo 3s are still going strong, performing well on all types of terrain without having shown any signs of wear and tear, on the way to the ancient city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
This latest project is a collaboration between Metzeler and BMW, and has Miquel riding the famous ‘Ruta Embajada in Samarkand’ (more than 10,000 km), on the new BMW R1200GS, nicknamed Victoria, equipped with Metzeler Tourance Next first then Karoo 3 tyres.
Silvestre began his adventure on 16 March 2013 from Madrid, and his route encompasses Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, finally arriving at the famous Uzbek city Samarkand and then ending in Formigal (Spain) at the beginning of September.
The Karoo 3s are fantastic at coping with difficult off-road conditions such as mud and sand and has been designed specifically for this type of harsh terrain.
In the photos and videos received by Silvestre from Asia, we can see the difficulties of the roads and can just imagine the great performance of the Karoo 3s in such circumstances. Thanks to Miquel Silvestre, Metzeler is implementing a new generation of tyres, such as the Karoo 3, perfect for long and adventurous travels with big enduro and traille style bikes.
The challenge for Silvestre and Metzeler will be to arrive in Uzbekistan with only one set of tyres used: 10,000 kilometres of challenging roads for which the Metzeler Karoo 3s were designed.
For now, Silvestre is preparing to cross the Caspian Sea to enter the port city of Aktau in Kazakhstan and continue in the direction of Uzbekistan across the desert, surrounding the dying salt lake Aral. Along the legendary Silk Road, Silvestre will visit the monumental city of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, where he hopes to find the contrada (district) of Madrid founded by the ambassador of the 15th Century Rui González de Clavijo, sent by King Henry III of Castile to the court of the Mongol emperor Tamerlane.
